RIP Ravi Shankar (images from the New Zealand International Arts Festival 2010)

Almost 30 years since sitar virtuoso Ravi Shankar last performed in New Zealand, and he returns during the Festival for his special 90th birthday performance. He is joined on stage by his daughter Anoushka, a sitar virtuoso and composer in her own right. (© Robert Catto / www.catto.co.nz)

Sorry to hear of Ravi Shankar's passing this afternoon; I photographed him at the 2010 NZ Int'l Arts Festival, at his sound check in the afternoon.  I remember him arriving on stage looking a little frail, but when he sat down and started playing it was like the years were lifted from him.  Great man, and lovely to see his daughter Anoushka with him on tour.
